👋 Artizen is the largest marketplace for artist grants. Our newsletter shares open calls for grants, fellowships, residencies, and retreats as well as short essays to help artists earn their financial freedom. Whether you’re a filmmaker, painter, or creative coder, being an artist is crazy hard. Get the resources you need to quit your job and make a living from your art.

What are the best grants for Black artists?

Culture is the programming language for society and determines how humans interact with each other at scale. Today, we live in a toxic culture that perpetuates social injustice and violence against Black Lives. There are many ways to change culture, but art is one of the most effective. This is why it is critical to fund Black artists. In order to rebuild our broken culture, we need an order of magnitude more art that explores the varied conditions, experiences, feelings and full range of humanity of the Black global community.

In this article I share a curated list of grants that are either explicitly for Black artists or that have a history of supporting Black artists. By no means is this an exhaustive list, but it does represent a sizable opportunity with over $1,700,000 in funding for Black artists working across all disciplines. This article is a living document, so please email me at grants@artizen.fund to suggest new grants to add.
